I love IT humor and jokes about geeks. So I love putting together lists of the best coding memes and jokes. It gives me the opportunity to sit down and laugh!
I’m a huge fan of The BBC TV comedy series ‘The IT Crowd’ (if you haven’t seen it, you really should!). And, of course, ‘The Big Bang Theory’, and much more. The thing about this kind of humor is that you have to be the subject of the humor to fully get it. So it isn’t like so much other humor, just judging and making fun of ‘others’, programming and coding jokes are created by people who know and understand computers!
I decided to include programming memes and coding memes on this site because I figured that, like me — many people who enjoy playing computer games (such as Cuphead and Fortnite, etc) will also either be coders or programmers or developers or have some computing job which means they ‘get’ coding meme humor. Oh, and like it, too.
Plus, so many programming memes include reference to video games, and so many video game memes make a reference to developers or coding, so they seem to be natural ‘bed-fellows’ if you see what I mean. Not actual bed, figurative bed!
So, here’s my most recent list of favorite funny coding memes. I’ll be adding another post in the coming week or 2 with some more, and if this isn’t enough, you can always check out my previous post (from last week) of that week’s 20 Best Programming Memes — I say ‘best’ but it’s really what tickles me at the time I’m putting together the list.
And the great thing about memes (I forgot to say) is that they can be quickly viewed, don’t make any noise, and enrich your day all in one, for free!

1.No Patrick, Linux is not a programming language!
‘No Patrick, Linux is not a programming language’ — love this one. And hits the bulls-eye of coding jokes right from the start, mainly because it’s only really coders and programmers who care that Linux is an operating system and not a programming language. The rest of the world puts it all into one box and really doesn’t care…
2. The Two States of Every Programmer: I am a God; I have no idea what I’m doing
And that’s the essence of being a developer. From God to clueless in a matter of seconds! On a daily basis, this is the experience!
3. I know C Programming
That moment when you realise, and you can say, with full realization of the implications…. Or just Neo, getting it all streamed straight to his memory…
4. Bro, you’re using internet too much…
I’ve been there. Have you been there? I’ve been there… can you go and buy some milk, we’ve run out — yes, send me the link. Too true. Devastatingly true…
5. Gamer Keyboard vs Programmer Keyboard
I like this one for being so astute… You can tell a gamer from a programmer by the keys which have been rubbed down on their keyboard. A gamer will wear down the w,s,a,d keys, primarily, as they are used for movement (forwards, backwards, left and right). The programmer uses the ‘;’ key for, like, everything, dude.
Although I find it difficult to believe there are many keyboards in the world owned by gamers or programmers which don’t have both areas rubbed clean — I know mine is (I have to touch type, I have no other option!)…

6. How do two programmers make money?
Ok, let’s really simplify everything into two camps — programmers who write viruses and programmers who write anti-viruses. And make a meme out of it. Done!
7. Windows Version History and Counting
Love this. In fact, I love any Bill Gates memes and there really should be more of them. I guess it stopped being so trendy to make fun of Microsoft but it really should be revived…
Anyway, here’s a hilarious meme about the version history of Microsoft Windows:
It started as version 1, which was fine, then proceeded sensibly to version 2 then 3… but then they decided to jump to dates and made the next version 95, for the year it came out. And followed that with 98 for the year that one came out… which is fine, if you’re going to be consistent. But there’s little consistent about Microsoft…
Next they go to NT… what’s that, you ask? It stood for ‘New Technology‘. Yes, instead of following their own naming conventions of numbering, then dating their versions, they decided to simply call it by a feature it contained, which in this case was ‘new technology’. Hmm… surely, you ask, all new versions contain something new? Well, maybe. In any case, Windows NT had primarily the same interface as Windows 95, but included preemptive multitasking and was the first 32-bit version of the Windows operating system — so NT it was…
But for the next version they jump back to dating it — as 2000 in this case. If you weren’t already confused, and many people already were, this reversion back to a previous numbering system certainly set the cat among the pigeons, figuratively speaking.
And then, guess what, they parachute in the letters XP for their next version. And what does ‘XP’ stand for? Windows XP stands for eXPerience. Yes, that’s right, complete nonsense!
Although the meme has left out Windows ME, which came before XP and stands for Windows Millennium Edition. Which is further confusing because it came out in 2000 and Windows already named a version Windows 2000…
Then there was Windows Vista (codenamed Longhorn!). I’m not sure why — probably because it sounded good.
Then came numbers 7, 8 and 10 — which make sense (except where is 9?) but are actually 10, 11 and 12 of the sequence. 11, 12 and 13 if we include ME.
If you’re actually reading this, you can find out more about Microsoft Version History here.
I hope that digression made sense to you…
8. People don’t know (don’t care) what their computers’ name is…
This is both funny and believable. I do believe someone thought their HP was a DY. It makes sense. In a non-sensical way. If you see what I mean.
9. My Brain as a Computer Processor (Examples)
Simply comparing the brain to a processing chip. Makes sense too…
10. Carpets for Matrix Fans
Love this carpet made of ones and zeros. It kind of reminds me of the Matrix. Which is cool. Still.
11. Tomorrow is a mystical land…
Maybe not Coding specific but certainly not alien to the coding mentality — tomorrow really is a form of storage…
12. The World’s shortest love story
I guess you need to know Python.
13. It was my understanding there would be no math!
This works both ways. Some people think it’s only about math. Some think it has nothing to do with math. Either way — don’t you love Chevy Chase?
14. Programmer is just a tool which turns caffeine to code!
Programmers and coffee go together like a horse and carriage… It’s a song!
15. I told him to wash the dishes, he said ‘not enough mana!’
More of a video gaming meme, really, but like I said, I think there’s a lot of crossover and I just happened to find this one funny too… When does one start adn the other stop?
16. What’s your address?…
This makes me chuckle every time. It’s a ‘pitch perfect’ coding meme. The screenshots from the TV series ‘MR Robot’ are perfectly chosen, and the actor Rami Malek’s expressions are entirely believable as being made for this exact dialogue. As is his character. One of my all-time favorite coding memes!
17. I told him I can’t open the jar, he told me to install Java!
Ok, I couldn’t resist this, even though it uses the same picture as the meme a few memes up. But this kind of meme gets better with repetition. Like one of those comedy shows where the characters always end up in the same situation and handle it the exact same way as before.
18. I just saved the world
For the literalists among you — this is one you can use at home!
19. Changing stuff and seeing what happens
Some books may as well use a title like this one. Wouldn’t it be funny, though, if O’Reilly did…
20. Sometimes, my code is like this…
Or a Minecraft meme — this one works on so many levels (did you see that pun slip in?).
